Pieve del Grappa
The sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Covolo is a Catholic religious building located in Crespano di Pieve del Grappa. According to tradition, in a nearby cave (covolo in the local dialect), a deaf-mute shepherdess had taken refuge there to shelter from a storm, when the Madonna appeared to her and miraculously cured her. Antonio Canova experimented here for the first time the lines of the Pantheon, creating the rotunda in front without demolishing the previous little church that still exists behind the apse set in the rock. It is seen as a sort of 'rehearsal' for the next Temple of Possagno. The interior frescoes are mainly twentieth-century works by don Delmetrio Alpago. | ||||||||||||||||||||
