At the end of Viale delle Fosse, in the heart of Bassano del Grappa, a statue was erected in honor of General Gaetano Giardino, commander of the IV Army starting from February 1918 and protagonist of the last months of the Great War on Monte Grappa. The inauguration dates back to 3 August 1936 when the PNF (National Fascist Party) and the city of Turin donated it to the Veneto municipality. The work is by the Piedmontese sculptor Stefano Borelli while the large base is due to the Roman architect Achille Morbiducci.
The statue, which is about 4 meters high, depicts the general Giardino as it scrutinizes Monte Grappa and Valsugana, the places where he directed the important operations for the final victory of the Kingdom of Italy and the place where he strongly wanted to be buried , near "his soldiers", in Cima Grappa. On his neck, clearly visible, he carries binoculars while leaning on a stick with his right hand. On the basement instead a simple dedication appears with his name and the famous phrase 'Monte Grappa Tu sei la Patria', first verse of the famous song born in the last year of the war.
