Archaeological area of the cathedral

Archaeological area of the cathedral

On December 20, 2014, the Vicenza calendar marks an extraordinary event! After a long period of excavations and interventions that have taken place since 1946 an Archaeological Area of about 750 square meters below the Cathedral was finally opened to the public. The space documents cult buildings from the early Christian to the Romanesque period.
In addition to this, the presence of constructions relevant to the private building of the Roman city is attested with traces of a large domus that fits into the context of the residential neighborhood of Roman Vicetia of which the "famous" domus of the cryptoporticus was also part.
A very suggestive space, full of history and stories to be discovered!
Thanks to an agreement signed with the Superintendency for Archaeological Heritage of the Veneto, the management of this site has been entrusted to the Diocesan Museum of Vicenza which proposes, through its Educational Services and guided tours, some educational itineraries between the so-called " excavations ”and the archaeological section of the museum which houses the most significant finds from this site. A move between present and past, between history and memory, in perfect harmony with the identity of the museum itself.
