Church of Santa Maria Nova

Church of Santa Maria Nova

The church of Santa Maria Nova has a single nave and its façade has a tympanum supported by four Corinthian half-columns and internally, on the side walls and in the lacunars of the ceiling, there were paintings by the greatest artists operating in Vicenza in the 16th and 17th centuries, now deposited in the Municipal Art Gallery of Palazzo Chiericati. The will to build the church, annexed to the convent of the Augustinian nuns of Santa Maria Nuova founded in 1539, was arranged by Ludovico Trento in his will of 1578. It is very likely that the project was drawn up by Palladio in the same year and realized, after his death occurred in 1580, by the master builder Domenico Groppino, a pupil of Palladio. The church was already built in 1590 and completed in 1594.
