The original temple stands on the site of the Marian apparitions and is composed of two churches, one Gothic (1426) and one classical-Baroque (1428). In 1826 a new bell tower was built based on a design by Antonio Piovene. The temple was enlarged and the apse was added in 1475 by Lorenzo da Bologna and further extended by Palladio in 1590. The temple was integrated into the new large basilica designed by the Vicenza architect Carlo Borrella, construction begun in 1688 and taken to term in 1703.
