Basilica of Saints Felice and Fortunato

Basilica of Saints Felice and Fortunato

The Basilica of Saints Felice and Fortunato is part of a monumental complex of the early Christian age among the most important in the Veneto region and is to be related, together with the Cathedral of Vicenza. The current basilica is the result of overlapping foundations. The first, built on the remains of a Roman cemetery, dates back to the 4th century and was dedicated to the martyr saints Felice and Fortunato; the second has three naves of the fifth century and the third, which in fact occupies the area of the previous church, except for the apse, is Romanesque (tenth-twelfth century). The bell tower, which at the base has Roman ashlars, was built in the 10th century but largely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1117. Since 2005, a museum has been opened that preserves the Roman and early Christian finds discovered on the site.
