Palladian Basilica

Palladian Basilica

The Palladian Basilica is the symbolic building of Vicenza. Renowned for its loggia in serliane, designed by the great architect Andrea Palladio, which surrounds the medieval Palazzo della Regione, it was included by UNESCO in the list of world heritage properties in 1994. Its white columns, elegant lines and extraordinary chiaroscuro of the loggias, the Palladian Basilica (or Palazzo della Ragione) represents the symbolic monument of the city of Vicenza. Palladio calls it the Renaissance monument, in homage to the structures of ancient Rome, where politics was discussed and business dealt with. On the first floor we find the majestic Council Hall, with a wooden ceiling in the shape of a majestic upturned ship hull. The noble monumentality of the work amazes for the coherence and simplicity of the language used, anchored to the classic reference, and for the perfect synthesis between the intervention of the Master and the pre-existing architecture, itself enhanced by the Palladian transformation. The image of the Basilica is completed with that of the 82 m high Piazza Tower, also called Bissara because it was built on a defensive structure of the powerful Bissari family. Between 2007 and 2012 the Basilica was the subject of a complex and articulated restoration intervention. architectural, functional and plant engineering., and was reopened on October 5, 2012 .. May 9, 2014 becomes a National Monument.
